AHRC honors Pakistan and community leaders at Dearborn Spirit of Humanity gala
The American Human Rights Council held its annual Spirit of Humanity Awards gala at the Fairlane Banquet Center in Dearborn, drawing community leaders, elected officials and civic and religious organizations from across Metro Detroit, The Arab American News reported. The council presented its Global Peacemaker Award to Pakistan for what Executive Director Imad Hamad called its diplomatic approach and role in mediation efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran; Pakistan's consul general in Chicago, Zaman Mehdi, accepted the award. Other honors went to the HUDA Clinic, which served more than 7,500 uninsured patients in the past year, Freedom House Detroit, and African American community leader Caryl Conway, with a tribute to the late Imam Abdullah El-Amin, co-founder of the Muslim Center of Detroit. Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud presented a plaque of appreciation to Hamad, and Michigan State Police director Col. James F. Grady II gave him an official recognition badge.
