Brampton to rename park for Kalair family, founders of city's first mosque
The city of Brampton, Ontario will officially rename Eastbourne Park as Kalair Family Park on October 16, honoring two longtime residents from the Kalair family, CityNews reported on October 14, 2026.
The renaming follows a city council motion in August. In a statement, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said the move honors the legacy of Muhammed Nawaz Kalair and Muhammed Aslam Kalair, saying the two brothers laid the foundations for Brampton's Muslim community. Brown added that the renaming is also taking place in celebration of Islamic History Month.
“Islamic History Month is an opportunity to recognize the history, traditions and people who have helped shape Brampton for generations,” Brown said.
Both brothers established Brampton's first mosque in 1977, along with an elementary Islamic school that has 300 students enrolled, according to CityNews.
