CAIR-NY urges hate-crime investigation into Staten Island campaign-sign vandalism
CAIR's New York chapter condemned anti-Islam vandalism targeting campaign signs on Staten Island and called on police to investigate the incident as a hate crime.
The organization said reports indicated that two unidentified people allegedly defaced the signs with anti-Islamic language. It welcomed what it described as the New York Police Department's ongoing investigation.
Executive director Afaf Nasher said vandalism expressing anti-Islam rhetoric attacked the community's democratic process and values. She urged local community and elected leaders to reject Islamophobia and stand with Muslim New Yorkers.
