Columbus police: man killed near mosque was Luqmaan Cusmaan, 21; shooting was not an attack on the mosque

Columbus police said Luqmaan Cusmaan, 21, was killed Monday afternoon in the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, near Alrahma Mosque, where a funeral was under way, Focal News reported on October 20. Police Sgt. James Fuqua said investigators do not believe the mosque was targeted and think the shooting followed an altercation involving a group of people at a nearby apartment complex. Police said Tuesday that several people were seen in the area shortly before the shooting and that detectives are working to identify them and determine a motive. Authorities have not released details about a suspect.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had said Monday that agents were responding to a report of a shooting at the mosque. Fuqua said the officers at the scene were Columbus police officers who also work with the ATF and were nearby for an unrelated reason, according to Focal News. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730.
