Dearborn Heights charter commission plans November 17 first meeting

The newly elected nine-member Charter Commission in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, will hold its first meeting November 17 to choose a chair and establish a roadmap for reviewing the city charter, commissioner-elect Mohamed Hamieh told The Arab American News.

Voters approved reviewing the charter, which dates to the city's incorporation in 1963, with 59.3% support in Tuesday's election. Proposed revisions would go to voters at a later date.

Hamieh said the chair would be selected by an internal vote among commissioners, not necessarily awarded to the candidate who received the most election votes.

He said the review would involve city departments, public hearings and direct meetings with residents, allowing them to submit proposals and raise concerns. The commission will consult the mayor's office, City Council, Treasury and City Clerk on organizational and financial requirements under Michigan law.
