FBI arrests McKinney teen accused of plotting to assassinate North Texas Rep. Keith Self
The FBI has arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney accused of plotting to assassinate U.S. Rep. Keith Self of North Texas, WFAA and NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported.
Self's campaign manager said the teen was arrested by the FBI on Oct. 5 and that the congressman's team learned of the arrest through U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 6. The campaign said it was told that investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was being monitored by federal agents, and that he had been planning an attack targeting an event Self was expected to attend. WFAA, citing federal law enforcement sources, reported the teen was arrested after acquiring a firearm and remains in federal custody.
The campaign described the alleged plot as "ISIS-inspired." Self, a Republican running for a third term in Texas' 3rd congressional district, said he increased his awareness and security as early voting continues across the state. The teen's name has not been released because he is a minor.
Gov. Greg Abbott praised law enforcement over the arrest in an Oct. 22 statement whose title described the case as an "Islamic terror plot against Congressman Self." "I am grateful to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping this threat," Self said in a statement provided to The Dallas Morning News. "My family and I are safe, and I remain focused on serving the people of Texas' 3rd District." The Morning News reported that federal authorities have not publicly confirmed details of the incident.
