Stevens withdraws from GW panel after backing Rogers against El-Sayed
Representative Haley Stevens will not participate in a post-election analysis panel at George Washington University that was scheduled for Thursday evening in Washington, D.C., according to The Hill. The report came after she endorsed Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan's Senate race, which Democrat Abdulrahman (Abdul) El-Sayed won Tuesday. The outlet did not give a reason for her withdrawal from the panel.
It is worth noting that House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries told Politico on November 2 that Haley Stevens had made a bad decision and isolated herself from the Democratic caucus by endorsing Republican Mike Rogers. He added that Democrats would discuss appropriate next steps after returning to Congress, while their immediate priority remained winning Tuesday's elections. The statement did not announce a decision to expel Stevens.
Politico also reported that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez urged Stevens not to withdraw her endorsement of Abdulrahman (Abdul) El-Sayed before Stevens ultimately endorsed Rogers. A person familiar with the call described a 25-minute conversation; text messages reviewed by Politico showed Stevens thanking Ocasio-Cortez for speaking with her.
