Halifax Islamic Heritage Day promotes understanding and youth involvement

An Islamic Heritage Day celebration at the Nova Scotia Islamic Community Center in Halifax invited visitors to learn about Islam and encouraged younger members to take part in community life, SaltWire reported on October 19.

Saturday's event included displays of jewelry, clothing and other items, along with performances and speeches. Imam Atef Asker said it was intended to reflect the community's diversity and help people address misconceptions through conversation and learning.

Volunteer Holly Groschok, who converted to Islam about two-and-a-half years ago, said learning about the faith had challenged her own earlier assumptions. She hoped visitors would leave with a better understanding of what it means to be Muslim.

Nova Scotia Lt.-Gov. Mike Savage emphasized understanding and reliance on one another in responding to the world's challenges. Youth advocate Hania Ali said events like this help young people understand the importance of community and connect generations, while thanking elders for laying its foundations.
