Omar calls for congressional accountability in new interview about home search
Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar called for Congress to hold President Donald Trump and the Department of Homeland Security accountable in a new interview with The Nation's John Nichols, published November 2. She described the October 12 search of her Washington home as a political effort to intimidate opponents and immigrant communities.
The Nation reported that the search was part of a criminal fraud investigation into immigration and citizenship paperwork filed by Omar's father when she was a child. Omar denied wrongdoing. Trump denied involvement in the raid, the magazine reported, while also calling Omar “totally crooked personally” that day.
Omar said Congress had a constitutional duty to defend its independence and members' rights under the Speech and Debate Clause. She criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson's response and said Democrats would hold the administration accountable if they regained the House majority.
She also described support from Minnesota residents, including mutual aid and help for immigrant families, as a response to fear. Omar said the harassment and death threats her family had faced had not shaken her belief in the country or its people.
