Planned Omar-Fateh event with Piker draws criticism in Minnesota

A planned event in Minneapolis, Minnesota featuring U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar, state Senator Omar Fateh and political streamer Hasan Piker drew criticism from Democratic leaders and Jewish groups, Jewish Insider reported on October 19.

The Minnesota Star Tribune reported on October 15 that Fateh had announced the election-themed event, scheduled for 6 p.m. on October 26 and organized by Baddies 4 Progress and HAUS of C. It is billed as the first edition of I’m The Host Now.

Jewish Insider reported that Representative Angie Craig criticized the event on Saturday and Senator Amy Klobuchar criticized Piker on Sunday. On Monday, the state Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s Jewish Caucus and the Jewish Community Relations Council of Minnesota and the Dakotas condemned the planned appearance and urged other Democrats to reject it. The groups accused Piker of antisemitic rhetoric.

The Star Tribune reported that Piker had rejected accusations of antisemitism, saying criticism of Zionism and Israel’s government should not be confused with hostility toward Jewish people. Responding to an earlier controversy over his remarks, he said he was warning that conflating Judaism with Zionism could fuel antisemitism, not excusing violence against Jews.

The Star Tribune described a wider debate among Democrats over Piker’s reach among younger progressives and the controversy over his rhetoric.
