Trump repeats attacks on El-Sayed at Iowa rally and praises Stevens

President Donald Trump repeated attacks on Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed at a campaign rally in Iowa on Sunday, while praising Representative Haley Stevens for endorsing Republican Mike Rogers, the Guardian reported on November 1.

Trump repeatedly called El-Sayed a “jihadist” and said Congress would have to get “a special metal detector for Abdul” if he were elected. “If you vote for this jihadist lunatic that wants to destroy you, you’re crazy,” Trump said.

The Guardian described the remarks about El-Sayed, a practicing Muslim, as racist. Trump also welcomed Stevens' decision to support Rogers after losing the Democratic primary to El-Sayed. “I’d love her to join the Republican party,” he said.

The dispute followed an outside group's advertisement linking rising prices to U.S. military support for Israel. Stevens demanded that El-Sayed disavow the advertisement and later endorsed Rogers after El-Sayed told her to stay away from a joint campaign event. Democratic leaders condemned her endorsement, the Guardian reported.
