Wisconsin Muslim group urges Ron Johnson to retract Sharia remarks
The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance called on Senator Ron Johnson to retract remarks about Sharia following Abdul El-Sayed's election victory in Michigan, apologize to Wisconsin's Muslim community and meet with Muslim leaders and constituents.
The group said Johnson claimed on The Benny Show that the country had opened its doors to Sharia law, warned about its treatment of women and suggested Democrats were advocating for it in America.
Executive director Fauzia Qureshi called the remarks racist and rooted in ignorance. She said a Muslim American winning an election represented democracy at work, and that Wisconsin should reject fearmongering.
Qureshi also rejected Johnson's comments about Muslim women, saying they serve as executives, lawyers, doctors, educators, business owners and public servants and speak for themselves.
