Yukon legislature rejects motion to reverse rental-law changes
Yukon's legislature defeated an opposition motion to reverse changes to the Residential Tenancies Act in a 12–7 vote on Wednesday, CBC News reported November 5. The amendments would end rent control and reintroduce no-cause evictions, but still require the Yukon commissioner's assent.
Whitehorse Centre NDP MLA Lane Tredger said they tabled 292 letters, many from Yukoners concerned about the changes' effects on people struggling to afford rent. The NDP says the amendments affect more than 2,300 households.
Both opposition parties supported the motion, while governing Yukon Party members voted against it. Premier Currie Dixon said the legislature had already decided the matter and knew what the amendments contained.
