Aber Kawas wins New York State Senate District 12 seat

Aber Kawas has won the New York State Senate District 12 seat, Middle East Eye reported, citing a New York Times race call.

Kawas is a Palestinian American organizer whose campaign emphasized affordable housing, health care and public transportation. Her election is to New York's state legislature, not the U.S. Senate.

Middle East Eye reported that Kawas posted a message after the victory saying, 'We made history.' Muslim Network TV also reported her victory.

The reported call is not official certification. Counting continues, and the final vote totals may change.
