Democrats win House and Senate majorities, taking control of Congress

Democrats have won control of the U.S. House and Senate in the midterm elections, the Associated Press reported, ending Republican control of both chambers when the new Congress takes office in January.

The House result is now a called majority, rather than only an estimate of the eventual seat total. Vote counting continues, and the final size of the Democratic majority is not yet settled.

A House majority will allow Democrats to lead committees and expand oversight and investigations of President Donald Trump's administration. Senate control gives them influence over presidential appointments and legislation.

These are media race calls, not officially certified results. Seat totals may change as counting is completed.
