Adam Hamawy projected to win New Jersey House seat

Democrat Adam Hamawy is projected to win New Jersey's 12th Congressional District, according to Decision Desk HQ, The Hill reported on November 3.

Hamawy, a surgeon and former Army physician, defeated Republican attorney Gregg Mele in the race to succeed retiring Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman. He will become New Jersey's first Muslim congressman, The Hill reported.

Hamawy drew attention in 2024 when he was among physicians trapped in Gaza after Israel closed the Rafah border crossing. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who credits him with saving her life after her helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004, helped secure their departure.
